Streamlined Mirrors TWO sizes of mirror have been added to the 1500 range of commercial-vehicle models made by Wingard Ltd. These are available with either flat or convex glass, sizes being 6-5 in by 3.75 in. (1551 fiat, 1552 convex) and 8.25 in. by 5.25 in. (1553 flat, 1554 convex).

The glass is encased in a one-piece moulded Plastics head which has a streamlined appearance. The glass is difficult to remove—reducing the chance of stealing—although broken glasses can be replaced without the use of tools by simply snapping into their location. Special attention has been paid to choice of glass and quality of silvering. To ensure against weathering a special sealant is used on the back face.

Makers: Wingard Ltd., Chichester, Sussex.

Prices (retail): 1551, 1 Is. 6d.; 1552, 15s. 6d.; 1553. 14s. 6d.; 1554, 19s. 8d. A RANGE of disc-mounted studs designed to provide for

fixing points on reinforced plastics laminates is now marketed by Metal Ventures Ltd. Called Bigheads they consist of discs of thin-gauge perforated mild or stainless steel to which studs (the first size available is 0-25 in. B.S.W.) are welded. Stud lengths range from 0-5 in. to 2 in. in 0-25 in. steps and the disc is 1.5 in. in diameter and when of mild steel is cadmium plated.

Makers: Metal Ventures Ltd., Mill Street, Aylesbury, Rucks.

Prices: For 10, from 4s. to 5s. 6c1. according to length, plus postage. Price reduces according to quantity; an example is from £1 18s. 3d. to £2 7s. 5d. according to length per 100 when from 100 to 500 are ordered.

New Electrodes TWO additions to the Quasi-Arc range of manual electrodes are now being marketed by the British Oxygen Co. Ltd. These are Ferron 4, a basic electrode with a non-hygroscopic coating suitable for on-site welding and Nyloid 1, a highnickel alloy electrode for welding 9 per cent nickel steel and joining dissimilar material combinations.

Makers: The llrtish Oxygen Co. Ltd., Hammersmith House, London, W.6.

Firm Yet Flexible Fasteners VIBREX fasteners now available fromSilentbloc Ltd. provide an ideal method of securing metal and plastics removable panels. The fasteners depend on the expansion of rubber for their locking action.

Only two plain holes are needed for the fasteners, one 7/32 in. in the panel and one # in. in the base. The spindle of the device is placed through the panel hole and a rubber sleeve and cam ring are placed over it. the final step being the insertion of a cotter pin into a hole in the end of the stud. The hole in the base is fractionally larger than the outside diameter of the rubber sleeve and when the panel is located on the base the Vibrex studs are turned (through slots in the heads), causing the cotters to ride up the faces of the cams, squash the sleeves and lock the panel to the base. If it is required to eliminate contact between the removable panel and the base 0.75 in.-diameter cushion

washers, or ;:,lr in, thick can be provided to locate between the two parts.

A range of sizes of fasteners is available, these being suitable for use on up to 1 in, combined panel and base thickness.

Makers: Silentbloc Ltd., Manor Royal, Crawley, Sussex.

Price: Up to 500 ordered, Is. 3d., price decreases to 10d. each when 10,000 or over are ordered. Forward and Side A FORK-LIFT truck introduced by Matbro Ltd. combines the advantages of conventional front-lifting fork-lifts and side loaders and can operate in areas where it would be impossible for these other types of machine to work.

Called the Swing-Lift fork truck, the model is based on the well-proved units of conventional fork trucks made by Matbro and is of a similar size to conventional front-lift units. The main feature of the design is that the lifting mast can be slewed through 90° so that when lifting wide loads such as stacked timber, the load can be brought into line with the direction of travel. The stewing action can be carried out whilst the truck is on the move so that when used, for example, in a timber yard the truck can approach the load from the front, lift it, then reverse and turn into the aisle, slewing the load at the same time until it is parallel with the centre line of the truck. The load can then be lowered to rest on the raised deck on one side of the fork truck.

With the new design, it is possible to have solid stacking of wide items, not possible with conventional side loaders, and at the same time narrow aisles, which are not possible with conventional front-lifting fork trucks.

Capacity of the Swing-Lift is 6,000 lb. and features of the design arc torque converter trans mission and full power steering with automatic manual take-over in the event of hydraulic failure. In place of the lifting forks a hydraulic crane jib attachment can be fitted. This unit allows long loads to be picked up and deposited on the deck without turning the machine in the aisle.
