Market day was warm and sunny, and Hinks, the carrier, had his motor full of passengers and provender. As they neared the top of High Street he noticed with surprise that the farmer beside him pulled his hat down over his face and began to turn up his coat collar. When they swung past the narrow opening and approached the square via Market Street the old man took off his hat and opened his coat. " You ain't goin' by High Street then?" he said with obvious relief. " It's closed to me at present," said Rinks; " some new police gadget." " closed to me too," confided the farmer ; "but it ain't the police in my caseāit's the grocer."
