Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• UK drivers are being urged to watch out for each other In the face of the increasing number of violent attacks by would-be stowaways.

Chris Williamson, general manager of Northamptonbased MAM Transport Services, warns that solidarity is more important than ever with incidents like the violent attack on one of his drivers, Andy Brogden, outside Calais last week.

"He was sitting in his cab eating when he spotted a group of illegal immigrants lurking in some nearby bushes," says Williamson. "He then saw them head for the back of two British lorries. He leaped out of his cab and with the help of some other drivers ushered them off the trailer."

Later the group of illegal immigrants returned and began to "pelt stones at the cab with one hitting Brogden on the head". Brogden, who was not seriously hurt, reported the attack to the French police who showed "no interest", according to Williamson.

"I would urge drivers to always be aware of attacks such as these," he adds. "Park In numbers. Make sure there are other drivers around when you carry out spot checks on your trailers for illegal immigrants. The worry is, of course, that some drivers will stop checking altogether if they are scared of being attacked.'
