St Dutch driver Perry Wacker has failed to clear his name in the Appeal Court over the deaths of 58 Chinese immigrants who suffocated in a sealed container as he tried to smuggle them into Britain.

Maidstone Crown Court had convicted him of 58 counts of manslaughter and of conspiring to smuggle the immigrants in June 2000.

And now the Criminal Appeal Court has dismissed his challenge to the manslaughter convictions. Lord Justice Kay refused to grant Wacker permission to appeal against his14-year jail term.

The stowaways were found dead at Dover Docks when Wacker's lorry was inspected after arriving on a ferry from Zeebrugge. Only two men survived after Wacker closed the trailer's only air vent.
