Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• An MP is calling for the DVLA to sort out the processing of LGV driver licence applications (CM 6-12 June).

Max Madden, MP for Bradford West, has taken up the cause after one of his constituents complained that he had been waiting three months for his HGV licence to be re-issued after it was withdrawn last year on medical grounds.

Madden has already brought up the case of Leeds-based A One driver George West in the House of Commons. West was forced to leave his job last autumn because of a mild heart condition.

Madden asked Roads and Traffic Minister Christopher Chope why West, who was given a clean bill of health by doctors three months ago, still had not heard from the DVLA. Chope said he needed West's date of birth or driver number to investigate the case.

Madden says he will press for compensation unless West receives his licence and is given a good reason for the delay. The Transport and General Workers' Union estimates that West has lost about £3,000 through the delay. A One Transport has held open West's job.

The DVLA says that LGV applications usually take two months to process. Those applying for provisional licence should use a special post code — SA99 1BR — to speed up applications, says the DVLA.
