For outstanding value, it seems, one must go farther north in Scotland. The second edition of Crane Fruehauf's Egon Ronay Guide to Transport Cafes contains Mr Ronay's nomination for the best value in Europe—the Spear' Hotel, in the Highlands. There one can get home-made soup, oatcakes, two large haddock fillets, chips, peas and a pot of tea for 65p.
Makes my mouth water just to write about it.
