Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Port plans unjustified

COMPLETELY unjustified and unnecessary is how the Freight Transport Association describes the port nationalisation proposals contained in the DoE's consultative document.

There is no evidence to suggest that the private ports had operated against the public interest and there was no need for the creation of a National Ports Authority, states the FTA.

Under the proposals, complains the Association, the ports would be re-organised to suit themselves rather than to meet the needs of the users upon which both the nation's trade and well-being depended.

The FTA feels that exemption should be made for ports handling own-account cargo for more than one manufacturer or producer ; but the "prejudicial machinery" authorised by the DoE for hearing objections by port businesses against their re-organisation should be replaced by an independent tribunal and a similar tribunal should be set up to hear appeals applicable to ship, passenger and goods interests.
