We have no weighbridge and the only way I can find the weight is to go to a public weighbridge and pay to have the vehicle weighed.

AYou, the driver, are responsible as the -user" of the vehicle for ensuring that it is not overloaded. Your employer will of course share some of the responsibility for any offence committed in this respect, but this does not absolve you from your duty of checking the weight on the nearest weighbridge.
