• Mr. James Ronald Henderson, managing director of J. R. Henderson (Transport and Storage) Ltd.. Newburn, Northumberland, said at a Section 178 inquiry at Newcastle upon Tyne on Wednesday that it was possible for lorry drivers to tamper with tachographs by pushing hot pins through the dial or using magnets to stop the mechanism. His firm was before the inquiry to show cause why its licence should not be curtailed following five convictions for offences concerning drivers records.

Mr. Henderson was answering the deputy Northern LA, Mr. J. A. Baldwin. who had asked whether tachographs were infallible, Mr. Henderson said his own drivers had not tampered with the tachographs that were fitted in his lorries.

He said the drivers' unions die not like the devices and regarded them as a spy in the cab. but he added that one either had to have one or go out of business.

He said that since the convictions the firm had introduced tachographs and a new system of checking records so that the offences would not be repeated.

Mr. Baldwin ordered the suspension of one of the firm's 10 lorries for three months, but agreed to uncontested applications by the firm to renew two Contract A licences and add one new licence for a vehicle for collection and delivery purposes.
