• Operators applying for vehicle tests at the Edmonton, London, test station find they have to wait longer than expected to get a test booking. Provided adequate notice to Swansea has been given, an exemption certificate is issued to cover the period from the date that a test is legally needed. But there can still be difficulties in disruption of maintenance plans geared to a particular test date, An MoT spokesman confirmedthis week with CM that there was an over-demand at Edmonton but said that the area covered by this establishment overlapped that of the Purfleet station which was working below full capacity at present. He suggested that operators should specify Purfleet if they were located between the two.

Delays were by no means widespread throughout the UK, he said, although there were occasional local difficulties. Overall, there was more than enough capacity at the testing stations but in the absence of accurate records of where vehicles were based, there were bound to be over-estimates of requirements in one area and under-estimates in others.

Figures up to the end of May (writes CM's technical editor, Tony Wilding), show that 192,000 tests have been carried out and 135,000 pass certificates issued. The difference of 57,000 represents the number

offailures but of these 38,000 vehicles passed on a free re-test on the same day or the day after the test, indicating that they had minor faults such as a light bulb missing. The 19,000 failures for more serious defects represent 14 per cent of the 135,000 vehicles put through. Clearly, operators need to pay far more attention to detail when they send a vehicle for its test.

But it is also apparent that at least one month's notice is needed in making a test booking. Two weeks' notice was accepted in the beginning provided that technical details of a vehicle were sent to Swansea well in advance. But this facility has now been withdrawn. Many operators are apparently applying for test dates very close to or even after the vehicle is due to be checked and in these cases no exemption certificate will be given so the vehicle cannot be operated after the date until it has a "pass" certificate.
