Edinburgh

by lain Sherriff • The excitement at the end of the Le Mans 24-hours race was almost equalled at the Edinburgh LDoY competition on Sunday. The 10 class winners were called on to run through the course a second time to find the champion, using a different vehicle for each manoeuvre The result was in doubt until the very last moment. The winner was A. C. Forsyth, who normally drives a 152 BMC, and during the run-off he had to drive a 37ft 6in artic outfit.

The Edinburgh competition moved into its third home last Sunday and the committee must be hoping that this is the last move. Redford Barracks could not be improved upon. It has all the facilities necessary for a successful eliminating centre.

There was fierce competition in a number of classes but the most hotly contested was E2. in which H. Littlejohn, of the British Oxygen Co., won his way to the final by one point. This means that seven BOC men from the company's northern area will be at Bramcote —a fitting reward for the regional transport manager. Mr. J. Grierson, who has attended five rounds this year, including Belfast, giving encouragement to his men.

Not so fortunate was Mr. William Russell, of Bathgate. who gives the Edinburgh round a great deal of support in many directions. Not one of his vehicles was placed, but perhaps this was because he had 13 entries.

One of the features of the competition this year has been the enthusiasm shown by employers. In addition to Mr. Grierson and Mr. Russell, I spotted in the crowd last Sunday Mr. H. R. Hart, deputy chairman of the Scottish Gas Board, Mr. Nichol Robertson, transport manager, Scottish Newcastle Breweries, Mr. J. Russell, National Carriers Ltd., Mr. J. Matthews, GPO.

It was obvious that competitors had taken trouble to study the Highway Code and many points in transport legislation which could be construed as drivers' legal liability. The penalties were minimal and the severity of the questions can be judged by one example which was: "What is the maximum length of a tow rope?" The answer is contained in C and U Regulation No. 99 and is 15ft—I wonder how many operators could have answered.
