A fleet of Albion vehicles is owned by Young's Paraffin Oil Co., Ltd., of Glasgow. These tank wagons are an enormous advantage to the retail dealer, as the trouble of empties is eliminated. By means or vehicles of the kind, the oil is taken direct from the depot, and over considerable ranges of delivery, with unequalled celerity.

North of the Ribble.

A local correspondent advises us that the Blackpool and Princess Steam Laundries, Ltd., now has a 13elsize motorvan for delivery work. The Preston steam laundry has also recently taken delivery of a Dennis van. R. Lawson, furniture remover, of Lytham and St. Annes-on-Sea, has taken delivery of his new 40 h.p. Leyland van. This last is a repeat order,

Co-operative Delivery.

Mr. J. A. White, President, of the Dorking (Surrey) Chamber of Comiiierce, is endeavouring to bring to a head, with the help of a local committee, a scheme for cooperative motor delivery within a seven-mile radius of Dorking. It is suggested that a subsidy might be given to a local motor firm for the first six months of working, and the committee is going further into details of the proposals at the moment.

Reliability of Speedometers.

" It is absolutely ridiculous," said a big factor, " for anybody to say that there is not a reliable speedometer on the market for commercial motors." He named one (the AT.), of which 70 or BO have been supplied to one firm, without a single complaint. The C.W.S. (Co-operative Wholesale Society, Manchester) is haying 15 fitted, and anyone who wishes further particulars can be directed to Leyland, Karrier, Belsize and other lorries fitted to such speedometers.

" For mileage-recording, a detail must be remembered by both employers (i.e., owners of heavy cars) and drivers who employ them. In course of time, a rubber tire is reduced in circumference—or in diameter, whichever way you like to express it—by wear and tear. Slowly, but surely, the tire becomes tn., three, four and more inches less in circumference. A speedometer, of course, cannot take account of this, but," added the faetor. " experience indicates that when the tire is well-worn it is necessary to allow 3 per cent. off mileage to allow for tire-wear."

Engines as Brakes.

The Heywood police summoned Birch Mills, Ltd., at Heywood Police Court, on the 12th inst., for not having two independent brakes on a Sentinel steam wagon. In this make of wagon, the crankshaft is in permanent connection, through a single chain, to the driving axle of the wagon, whilst, the pistons and cylinders can act as air compressors. The police relied on the case of Willmott v. Southwell, which concerned a petrol vehicle. After a long hearing, the Bench considered that the case under notice was clearly distinguishable from the ease of Willmott v. Southwell, and dismissed the summons.

Mr. John Grace appeared for the defendant, company, and it should be noted that the finding of !he Court was Dartioda rly in relation to the specific combination of the air-compressor arrangement, and they were of opinion that the cushioning effect of the steam "on the reverse," which is the customary method of control by the average steam-wagon driver, is effective in law to comply with the requirements of the Motor Car Use and Construction Order.

Commercial Motor Users Association.

1912 Porade.—Tn the absence of the Chairman of the Parade Committee, Mr. Shrapnell Smith presented the preliminary report on the Whit Monday Parade, which had proved to be entirely successful from every point of view. A further report, in the form of a memorandum, would be subsequently submitted to the Committee, it was stated.

A vote of thanks was unanimously passed to the London General Omnibus Co., Ltd., for the assistance it hall rendered in connection with the Pa rade.

Conference on Rood .1faieric7. The following were appointed to represent. the C.M.U.A. at the conference convened by the Engineering Standards Committee:

Petrol Conference.—The following members were elected to represent the C.M.U.A. at the Conference appointed by the ft.A.C. to inquire into the petrol question :

County Councils A.mociation.— The following committee was appointed to meet representatives of the National Traction Engine Owners and Users Association, to consider the report of the Highways Committee of the County Councils Association :

Lancashire Branch—The Hon. Treasurer reported the result of his visit to Lancashire, in connection with the proposed affiliation of the North and East Lancashire C.M.U.A., and outlined the suggested terms of agreement. It was resolved that a memorandum on the. matter be circulated to the members or the General Committee before the next meeting.

Tramcar Trailers.—The Chairman reported the result of the petition against the particular clause of the London County Council (General Powers) Bill dealing with the running of tramcar trailers.

Finance.—The report of the Finance Committee and the Budget were received and considered satisfactory.

The Financial Statement. for the month, showing a satisfactory hank balance, was received. It was resolved to place £200 on deposit.

Committee. The resignations of Capt. Bagnall-Wild and Cant. Davidson were accepted with regret ; a special vote of thanks was accorded to the former. Major W. E. Donohue (Aldershot), Major H. Carleton Wilder (Aldershot.). Capt. Tltid Nichol] (Hedges and Butler. Ltd.), Mr. T. H. Jones (Yorke, Stoneham and Jones, Ltd.) and Mr. E. Percy Beavan (James Nelson and Sons. Ltd.) were added to the committee.
