VEHICLE away from a test station after a tyre blowout has cost a Welsh lorry driver £365 in fines and costs.
Peter Williams, of Chirk, pleaded guilty when he appeared at Wrexham Magistrate's Court accused of using a vehicle with a defective tyre.
Richard Johnson, prosecuting for Vasa, said that in January a tipper driven by Williams and belonging to Barry Griffiths Haulage entered the Llay test station to deliver a load of stone.
A traffic examiner who heard a loud bang saw the driver get out of the cab and examine the tyres. After making the delivery the driver drove the vehicle out of the main entrance gate on to the public road. It was followed by a marked Vosa support vehicle, which escorted it back to the test station where it was found that the tyre on the inner wheel of axle two was holed and part of the metal cord structure was protruding. The tyre was completely deflated.
When interviewed, Williams had said he had intended driving the vehicle back to the company's yard at Alltami. He claimed that he tried to contact the company but could not get through.
He was fined £250 with £115 costs.
