A LINK BETWEEN poor diet and a sleeping disorder which increases the risk of road accidents will be highhghted at a conference for oil tanker drivers next month.
Obstructjve Sleep Apnoea/Hypopnoea Syndrome (OSAHS) is said to be relatively common among middle-aged men who carry extra weight, particularly around the neck.
The sufferer's sleep is disrupted by loud snoring and the increasing effort needed to breathe in. This, in turn, leads to daytime sleepiness, increasing the risk of road accidents.
The Transport & General Workers Union says it has just come to light that OSAHS may be something to which truckers are prone. As a result, it has invited a speaker from the department of sleep medicine at The Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh to outline the risks to Scottish tanker drivers at their annual conference on 20 August.
