Britain's hauliers have been warned to prepare for tougher new pollution controls on diesel-engined trucks.

Representatives of the industry are now co-operating in a European Community consultation process designed to draw up new rules for implementation in the 1990s.

The decision to take action on trucks follows the staggered crack-down by the Government on cars already signalled in the Commons by the roads and traffic minister Peter Bottomley.

He has set up a motor vehicles emmisions group — including representatives of lorry manufacturers and users — which will spend the next twelve months drawing up proposed rules covering emrnission controls for lorries.
