• Lancaster City Transport's 18-month venture into the competitive market in Kendal will come to an end this month.
The company originally started up in November 1978 in direct retaliation to the attack on its routes in Morecambe and Lancaster by Ribble. A depot was set up in Kendal 12 months ago and specially shortened Bedfords were acquired for the town services.
The company says it has been facing profitability and recruitment difficulties. Ribble responded vigorously with fare reductions and service improvements and was recently replaced by Cumberland Motor Services, when both companies reorganised their South Lake land services. Lancaster's withdrawal from town services will not mean the closure of its outstation, however. Up to three buses and five of its drivers will stay on to operate the hourly Lancaster-Ambleside service.
This will remain as one of the few competitive services within the Stagecoach Group operation in Cumberland.
