I The Commons Public ccounts Committee has called the Department of Transxi to work with the Bus and pach Council on "a funmental reappraisal" of the [35m bus fuel-tax rebate. This follows a National Audit ffice report which concluded at the DTp had administered e grant fairly, but had only ade a limited analysis of its fectiveness, scale and pur)se. The Public Accounts ornmittee wants the review take into account buses' intribution to relief of congesAi and pollution: factors that were largely ignored by the 1985 Transport Act.
The joint review will aim to establish if operators' needs have gone up or down since deregulation, and whether there are other ways of ensur ing that help gets to those who need it.
The BCC says the committee recognised that removal of the grant would result in fare increases of up to 14%, or a 12% fall in bus movements.
