TIIE, LEGAL challenge to the Government over its raising of the Severn Bridge tolls by 150 per cent has begun.
Gwent County Council, backed up by Dyfed and Mid, South and West Glamorgan, served the papers on Monday this week, although the toll rises came into effect on June 23.
A spokesman for the South Wales counties said that they were confident of a victory over Transport Secretary Nicholas Ridley.
They argue that he acted outside his powers by not considering all the objections to an increase at the public inquiry last summer. Unless the High Court hearing is speeded up, the case is unlikely to be heard until September at the earliest.
