RESIDENTS have cramped plans by BRS Southern to move its Canterbury depot.

BRS applied to take over the depot in Roper Road, Canterbury, from Roadline, its parcels carrying National Freight subsidiary. Roadline has 31 vehicles and 12 trailers authorised at Roper Road although only seven run there

110W.

BRS wanted to move from its existing Canterbury depot at Tudor Road and sought authority to operate 30 vehicles and seven trailers from Roper Road (CM, June 29).

In his decision, South Eastern Licensing Authority Randall Thornton said the residents had shown that they bad suffered environmental detriment from Roadline's operations and would suffer the same from BRS unless some protection was given.

It would be unreasonable to refuse the application in view of the long history of operations from the site, but he said the scale of the operation should be reduced to alleviate some of the nuisance.

He was prepared to grant the application for 12 vehicles and six trailers only subject to the receipt of an application by Roadline to reduce to seven or fewer the number of vehicles it is authorised to operate from Roper Road. That would be subject to conditions.

• First, not more than six of the authorised vehicles in possession may be articulated tractive units designed for combinations of 32.5 tonnes or over.

O Second, movement of authorised vehicles into or out of the operating centre to be restricted to 6am to 8prn Mondays to Fridays, 6am to 2pni on Saturdays, and no movement at all on Sundays.

• Movement outside those hours may be permitted in emergencies, the circumstances of which should be reported to the Traffic Area office within three working days.
