ENGINES must work harder in Finland than in most other European countries. This does not normally reflect more arduous operating conditions. Rather, when a vehicle reaches its destination the engine, instead of being switched off, is used to provide power for handling aids, lorry loaders, lifts and other labour-saving devices.
The latest attempt to achieve faster turnround times for distribution vehicles comes from Sisu in the form of a novel underfloor-engined van in which North American city truck experience is blended with the more specific needs of the Finnish user.
Based on the Sisu SB 127 C psv chassis powered by a Valmet diesel engine of 127 kW, the new vehicle has a one-man driving cab in the full forwardcontrol body. Access to the cab is by means of a folding jackknife door from the load deck which extends over the full length of the llm long body. In turn a door in the nearside front of the body allows the driver to enter and leave the vehicle.
A Nummi electro-hydraulic full-width lift platform is fitted at the front of the vehicle; it can be used in collection and delivery work and can double as a dockboard with the vehicle facing a loading bank.
Suitable for a payload of over 6 tonnes, the new Sisu city truck has a one-man cab al one side of the full-length van body. The lay-out is claimed to result in great savings ol time at delivery points.
