HIGHER FARES on the Scottish Bus Group are driving passengers away. And if SBG continues to force them up, the service will run itself into the ground.
This is the forecast of East Lothian councillor George Wanless who has been trying to persuade Lothian Region transportation sub-committee to bring some "sanity" to the situation.
This follows last month's application by SBG to increase charges by an extra lp on the basic 9p rate. SBG says its fuel and wage bill will cost another £5m this year.
In March the Bus Group were given the go-ahead to increase fares by an average of nine per cent. The latest application will be heard by the Scottish Traffic Commissioners in Edinburgh next month.
