DAIMLER-BENZ's commercial vehicle exports were down by 16.6 per cent last year compared with 1977, according to an Economist Intelligence Unit report issued this week, and MAN dropped 19.7 per cent. The losses are attributed to a declining Middle East market.
Daimler-Benz is still Germany's leading heavy goods vehicle manufacturer with 38,500 sales a year. MagirusDeutz takes over second place from MAN with 10,800, although when VW's 94,000 light vehicles are counted in, the picture changes.
The Magirus market is influenced through its IVECO partnership. German manufacturers look for a return to their mid-1970s' figures next year when model replacement programmes become effective.
