THE FUTURE of Scotland's busiest non-motorway trunk road hangs in the balance.

A feasibility report on the replacement for the A80 trunk road which runs northeastwards from Glasgow to the southern end of the M80 at Haggs near Cumbernauld has been submitted to the Scottish Development Department.

The A80 is notorious for queues and delays — as goods traffic alone is 7-8000 vehicles per 16-hour day, which is equal to total traffic volume on many other trunk roads.

The SDD-commissioned working party which compiled the report has suggested four basic possible corridors for a replacement road. The favourite is currently one that runs to the north of the existing A80. It is said to offer the most advantages but at the highest capital cost.
