ROCHDALE'S GROSS BUS PROFIT SWALLOWED UP.

THE report of the passenger transport committee of Rochdale Corporation for the year ended March 31, 1934, shows that the 114 municipal buses -were operated at a gross profit of £51,379. Income totalled 2212,289 and working expenses 2160,910, the balance on a per-mile basis being 3.27d. The net revenue account shows that, after meeting interest, sinking fund and other charges, including those for abandoned works and loans repaid, there was a deficit of 27,684.

During the year the buses covered a total mileage of 3,755,017 and carried 32,455,598 passengers. The fleet of Rochdale CorPoration comprises 78 Crossley buses and 36 of Dennis make, 43 of the former being oil-engined 50seaters.

READING BUSES BEAT TRAMS.

FOR the first time the tramways are unable to hold the premier position in Reading Corporation's transport undertaking, states Mr. J. M. Calder, the general manager, in his annual report. In the year ended March 31 last, the combined bus and tram undertaking worked at a net profit of 26,540, as compared with 2437 a year earlier. The gross revenue of 2133,897 in 1933-34 was a record and compared with 2130,846 a year earlier.

Of the former figure, the bus traffic was responsible for 476,133 (269,003 a year earlier), whereas the tramway traffic receipts fell from 258,856 in 1932-33 to 254,624 in 1933-34. The total traffic expenses of the combined tram and bus undertaking amounted last year to 246,305 (246,452 a year B44 earlier), repairs and maintenance accounted for 224,938 (222,810 in the preceding 12 months), whilst the general expenses were 210,000 (29,731 in 1932-33).

The number of passengers carried by the buses increased from 8,198,048 to 9,254,801, whereas the number of persons using the trams decreased from 9,465,525 to 8,793,300. Mr. Calder states that many members of the public prefer to travel by bus, although they have to pay higher fares than those charged on the trains.

DISTRIBUTING BIRKENHEAD'S, PROFITS.

BIRKENHEAD Corporation's tramways committee has decided that, as recommended by the borough treasurer, the balance of the net profits of the tramways department, amounting to 21,778, after making a rate contribution of 23,775, be applied in acceleration of redemption of debt. In respect of the motor department, the balance of the net profit (22,509), after making a rate contribution of 222,200, is to be transferred to the bus reserve fund.

WORCESTER'S £12,000 PROFIT FROM "MIDLAND RED."

IN the past municipal year Worcester "Corporation reaped a profit of 212,016 fromthe operation of the local bus undertaking by the Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Co., Ltd., by arrangement with the corporation. The buses operating in the city covered 727,000 miles and on the through services 281,000 miles. The Birmingham and Midland concern received 3d. a mile under the agreement.

BIG BUS AND TROLLEYBUS PROFITS AT WALSALL.

THE operation of the petrol-bus services of Walsall Corporation resulted in a gross profit of 244,641 in the year ended March 31, 1934, income having totalled 2170,295 and working expenses 2125,654. After meeting interest, income tax, depreciation and sinking-fund charges, the net balance was 216,415, which is carried to the appropriation account.

During the year the petrol buses covered an aggregate mileage of 3,241,559 and carried 21,244,086 passengers. At the end of March last the corporation had 97 petrol buses in stock, mainly of Dennis make, the vehicles operating on a route mileage of 195.

So far as trolleybuses are concerned, at the end of March last such vehicles were in use on a route mileage of 10. During the past year the trolleybuses were operated at a gross profit of 211,388, the net balance, after taking into account interest, sinking fund and other charges, being 26,565. The income on the trolleybuses was 227,755, working expenses having totalled 216,367.

During the year the trolleybuses covered a gross mileage of 418,513 and carried 4,115,355 passengers. At the end of March last the corporation had 19 trolleybuses, mostly Sunbeams.

YORK'S RESULTS.

Y0 R IC Corporation's tramways worked, during the year ended March 31 last, at a net loss of 23,488. The net loss on the motorbuses was 2978 and the net profit on the trolleybuses 2665.
