CONDITIONS in the heavy indus-...tries, which are a reliable indication of the prospects of business throughout the country, remain " set fair." The amount of merchant tonnage under construction in the various shipyards of the country was fully 20 per cent. higher during the quarter just ended than in the previous quarter, and was actually more than double that of the corresponding quarter last year.

From the iron and steel manufacturing areas of Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire comes information equally optimistic. Further substantial purchases are to be recorded, whilst some of the North Lincolnshire steel factories are working to full capacity. A large new factory was opened, last week, at BiHingham for the manufacture of titanium white.

Cotton and Wool.

Trade is on the mend in the heavywoollen districts, where the mills have now commenced work upon products for next winter. Several Gelman manufacturers are arranging to open factories in the London area, in the Midlands and in the North of England. These are intended to be devoted to the manufacture of women's wear.

Trade in drapery and clothing is more active in the provinces than it has been for some time. From Leicester it is reported that there is a keen demand for coloured sports shirts for men, several factories being in receipt of repeat orders. Some concerns specializing in the lighter kinds of knitted wear are also busy; The conditions in the cotton factories, as regards both home and export trade, remain much the same as reported in last week's issue.

Boots and Shoes: Leather.

Northampton manufacturers of highgrade goods are fully employed and the demand for summer lines of boots and shoes is still keen. Some makers of slippers are having to refuse orders. The seasonal demand for football boots has commenced. Orders for leather are plentiful in number, but small.

Timber and Building.

The arrivals of timber at the docks are still on a big scale and the demand by users is well maintained, so that there is still a fairly constant flow of loads ex docks. The building trade is as active as ever, with correspondin& reaction on supplies of accessories.

The following figures relate to large works which are contemplated :— Schools are to be built at Aberdeen (2184,250) ; Corby (27,910);. Essex (£54,718) ; Lewisham, London (£30,643) ; Somerset (291,526), and Dundee is spending 242,850 on school extensions. Birkenhead is to spend 222,287 and Halifax 230,336 on roads, etc. Colchester is to carry out electricity extensions to cost 263,000 and Grimsby is spending £52,390 on electricity works.

Wandsworth Institute, London, is to be extended at a cost of 256,280 and Woolwich is to have a polytechnic building which will cost approximately 224,850. Swindon is spending £54,500 on municipal offices and Waltham Abbey £75,000 on hospital extensions.

Houses to the number of 162 axe being built at Canterbury (258,225) ; 370 houses are being erected in Wednesbury (125,040); 96 at Darlaston (£32,535), and 148 at South Shields (249,000). Shoreditch and Stepney are planning housing schemes to cost £38,000 and 225,000 respectively. An employment exchange is being erected at Leeds, at a cost of £40,000, and a cinema at Wigan, to cost £30.000.

A huge departmental store, to cost 2.50,000. is to be erected at Falkirk by the Falkirk and District Co-operative Society. Barrhead T.C. is to build 650 houses under the five-year plan. Hamilton T.C. is to erect 224 houses under the Housing (Scotland) Act, 1930. South Queensferry T.C. is to construct 48 houses west of the Hopetoun cross-roads. Fife C.C. is to build 1,602 houses under the five-year plan, 85 to be erected at Kirkcaldy,. 540 at Lochgelly, 170 at Beath, 188 at Wemyss, 199 at Cupar, 108 at St. Andrews, 99 at Anstruther and 213 at Dunfermline. Kirkcaldy T.C. is to build 164 houses on the Fannie Road and Dunnikier Road site.

Over 140 acres of ground at Garrowfield, 13aillieston, near Glasgow, are to be developed as a housing scheme by Messrs. Henry Boot and Son, building contractors, Sheffield. Edinburgh T.C. is to erect a 350-ft. chimney at Portobello Power Station, to cost 250,000.

Actual contracts placed include the following major items :—Messrs. Thompson and Sons, Carlow, are erecting a pottery factory at Arklowl Messrs. F. T. Wilson and Sons,' 115, St. James's Street, Brighton, are carrying out extensive building operations for Brighton T.C. (234,825). A, N. Coles (Contractors), Ltcl„ is erecting a secondary school at Ilfracombe for Devon E.C. (212,227). Messrs. R. Wearing and Sons, Liverpool, are to extend the nurses' home, Smithdown Road Hospital.

Holland and Hannen and Cubists, Ltd., is erecting the superstructure of the first section of the university buildings for the Court University of London (362,579). Eleven pairs of cottages are being erected at the SeveralLs Hospital by Pavitt Bros., Ltd. (£11,374). Messrs. J. Dolan and Son, Rapier Street, Warrington, are erecting 72 houses in the Mersey Street area, Wallasey, for the T.C. (224,862).

William Taylor and Son(Glasgow), Ltd., has obtained a contract in connection with the Galloway water-power scheme for the construction of three road diversions at Earlstoun and

Carlsfad. • Hardware.

The cutlery trade in Sheffield is fairly busy. The output of razor blades is declared to be tremendous. In the Midlands, light-casting makers are working to capacity and the demand for edge tools, particularly picks, shovels and other implements for building and road making, is active.

Rayon.

It will be worth while to keep in fairly close touch with rayon (artificialsilk) manufacturers in the near future. Business in yarns, which has been quiet during the past month, is now likely to improve.
