Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE number of moth; vehicles registered for the first time under the Roads Act, 1020, during May, 1984, was 85,053, compared with 29,466 in May, 1933. There was a rise in both commercial classes, goods vehicles having increased from 4,546 to 5,727 and hackney vehicles from 549 to 866.

Analysing the goods-vehicle returns, the chief increase is once again to be noted in the 2-2i-ton class, the figure of 1,214 in May last comparing with 795 in May, 1933. Increases were also shown in the classes for vehicles not exceeding 12 cwt. (from 761 to 875) and from 12 cwt. to 1 ton (from 593 to 790). There was a slight decrease in the 1-1f-ton class, but an increase from 1.391 to 1,583 in the 11-2-ton class. The registration of 21-3-tonners advanced from 168 vehicles to 271, but in the heavier classes there was a slight B24 falling-off. The totals for 1.933 include vehicles driven on coal gas, oil fuel, etc., whereas these are now recorded independently.

In the Mass for oil-engined vehicles, 132 registrations took-place, 43 of them being in the 4-5-ton class and 34 in the 3-4-ton category. It is interesting to note that 16 registrations of such vehicles were recorded in classes not exceeding 2% tons unladen weight. In May last 13 steam vehicles were registered and 41 electric vehicles, these figures contrasting with 5 and 6 re spectively in May, 1933. No goods vehicles propelled by coal gas were registered in the period under review.

Included in the total for goods vehicles are 198 six-wfieeled vehicles, 132 being of the rigid type and 6$ of the articulated kind, whilst 26 vehicles were licensed for drawing trailers ; one eight-wheeled vehicle was also registered.

Turning to hackney vehicles, we find that 703 petrol vehicles were registered, 119 oil-engined vehicles and 44 trolleybuses. In the 26-32-seater class 837 registrations took place, as against 183 in May, 1933. In the 48-56-seater class (petrol and oil-engined), 126 registrations were recorded, as contrasted with 39 a year earlier. In the class for the largest seating capacity (56-64-seaters) there were 38 registrations, of which 36 were trolleybuses.

During May, 1934, 48 tractors were registered, as against 38 a year earlier, this year's total including 27 agricultural tractors with an unladen weight not exceeding five tons, and 21 generalhaulage tractors, of which 15 had an unladen weight not exceeding two tons.
