You Can Get It At

" W.L." (Aberdeen).—The Scott Robinson carburetter was handled by Motor Equipments, Ltd., of 82, Victoria Street, London, S.W. So far as we can ascertain, this company does not now operate under that name. As regards repairs, probably the best thing for you to do would be to get some local brassfounder to do the work for you.

Apollo Sparking Plugs.

We have recently received from Brown Bros., Ltd., Great Eastern Street, London, E.C., samples of a new sparking plug, which is stated by the makers to be particularly suitable for use in cominerciaIvehicle engines.

"Mark Al" is an all-mica plug. The construction of this plug is as follows : A central electrode is first of all wrapped with sufficient layers of mica to withstand an electric pressure of 80,000 volts. After this is securely fixed, mica washers are compressed on the whole length of the wrapper, and these afterwards turned in the lathe to the required dimensions. The next process is to press the outside mica washers over the cone. When this has been carried out, the whole is then secured in such a wa'S, as to obviate any possibility of the washers coming loose. They are subsequently rendered waterproof by impregnation with a special compound. The qualities of mica as an insulating material are, of course, well known. Its heat-resisting properties combined with its strength are perhaps greater than in any other material possessing the same insulating qualities. The purest form of mica is used and it is freed from iron.

"Mark S" is the other type of plug which is being made. It is a modification of the Al model, the principal difference being the porcelain cap which is used in place of the mica. Its constructional details apart from this are the same as in the other model. The ignition points of both types are manufactured of pure nickel, and the method of construction, by inserting the centre core through the firing end, is claimed to be entirely original. The price of the former model is 4s., and the latter 3s. 6d. The Apollo plugs unquestionably bear the stamp of a British production. We understand that Brown Bros., Ltd., has the agency for these plugs, and will supply full particulars upon application. A Positive Lock Nut.

The chassis manufacturer is always open to favour a means of fastening which will be safe and effective. To satisfy this demand various constructions of lock nuts have been placed on the market from time to time, but we think we are correct in saying that in only a few instances have they been adopted to any extent.

A lock nut which has been on the market for close upon two years and which has met with support from many directions is the Vislok, manufactured by Vislok, Ltd., 3, St. Bride's House, Salisbury Square, Fleet Street,. London, E.C. The device consists of two nuts which can move relatively to each other, but which, in practice, form a reliable single lock. The Vislok has a solid, continuous thread, and, when locked, gives a regular and positive hold on the threads of the bolt. There is also a special circumferential locking grip, which clasps the whole of the bolt thread, which becomes firmer under stress and working conditions. This locking action is automatically increased by the working load. The lock nut can be locked. or unlocked, as the case may be, by an "ordinary Whitworth spanner.

The Vislok is also manufactured as an axle bearing lock nut, and in this nut is embodied a. keyed or cone washer for securing the road wheels of the vehicle to the axle. It comprises three sections, which, during the course of manufacture, are forced together by hydraulic pressure and are guaranteed by the makers to be absolutely inseparable.

The lock nut can be readily adjusted at any time to take up wear from the washers, or ball, or roller bearings. As will be seen from our illustrations, when the two lines on the sides of the nut are ia a straight line, the lock nut has a direct run of thread, but when they are out of the straight the lock is effective and positive.

We understand that the device has been tested and adopted by the Admiralty, and amongst many of the best known users we may mention ArmstrongWhitworth and Co., Ltd., Vickers, Ltd., Dorman and Co., Ltd., Ransoms, Sims and Jefferies, Ltd., Robey and Co., Ltd., Ruston, Proctor and Co., Ltd., etc.
