DRIVERS in Grimsby who had been on strike for eight days over the introduction of EEC regulations in Britain ended their action on Monday night after a ballot.
The 1,200 members of the Transport and General Workers Union were protesting against the introduction of EEC drivers' hours, tachographs and the 281-mile a day distance limit contained in Regulation 543/69.
And their action had led to nearly 10,000 other workers in the Grimsby area, working mainly in the fish processing industry and employed by Birds Eye, Findus and Associated Fisheries, being laid off.
Road Haulage Association industrial relations officer Chris Dixon told CM that the RHA had received an assurance from the East Midland traffic area that there would be no prosecutions over EEC regulations.
It was this assurance that was passed to TGWU national organiser Jack Ashwell and led to the Monday night ballot decision to return to work.
The action was the result of a mass meeting held in Grimsby when the men unanimously voted for the strike in protest, as one union official put it, "about other countries dictating to us."
