COMMENTS on the Government's White Paper on Transport Policy by the Confederation of British Road Passenger Transport (CPT) have been put together and issued in the form of a memorandum addressed to the Secretary of State for Transport.
The memorandum contains a summary of the Confederation's thinking on the White Paper and all its aspects affecting the bus industry.
The memorandum attacks the Government and the DTp for not allowing adequate consultation on the problems of licensing road transport, and states that the Confederation will submit a separate memorandum on licensing at a later date.
Among the Confederation's suggestions in the memorandum are: adequate compensation for the burden of EEC drivers' hours should be available to Britsh industry; county councils failing to show that the TPP/TSG system supports general mobility should be directed to do so by the Secretary of State; councils should liaise with operators when presenting their transport plans; the independent role of the Traffic Commissioners should not be undermined, and rural transport experments should not jeopardise existing transport operating.
