Any prizes for selecting the worst single decision of William Rodgers, the Transport Minister?
Bob Philipson, director of the British Road Federation, speaking at last week's Transport Association lunch, reckoned that Rodgers's decision to route the M1 east of Leeds was staggeringly inept. It reflected, he said, the majority decision of completed questionnaires by members of the public, but it counted as a single vote the much more representative voices of county councils, the CBI, TGWU and other bodies of substance.
Another gaffe of Bill Rodgers, in Philipson's view, concerns the routeing of the M65 Calder Valley Motorway, where the route chosen will carry only about 34,000 vehicles a day compared with one with a capacity of 60,000 vehicles a day. Lancashire county councillors, it appears, are so shattered at this that they have asked for an informal inquiry into the decision, regarded as creating havoc with the morale of DTp and county road officials.
