DRIVERS passing through Turkey must now convert at least 300 US dollars or the equivalent (about £155) into Turkish lira when they enter the country.
The Turkish Government say that this is to cover expenses that may be incurred in the country and they also say that any balance will not be reconvertible into foreign exchange.
Money must be converted each time a driver enters the country so that it is not possible for the residue of lira from one trip to be put towards the lira needed for the next trip.
The new rules applies only to commercial vehicles' drivers and is seen as being a ruse to allow the Turks to boost — at least temporarily — their reserves of foreign currency.
