AN unopposed application by Emery Air
Freight Corporation, London Airport, for a three-ton vehicle to be placed on its B licence, was granted in London last week by Metropolitan Licensing Authority Mr. D. Muir.
Miss E. Havers, for the American company, said that the vehicle would be used to collect and deliver goods within a 60-mile radius of London Airport, to and from Birmingham, and within a 50-mile radius of Birmingham Airport This would provide flexibility and connection between the cities.
This was an urgent application, said Miss Havers, as the vehicle was one of three improperly on Contract A.
Mr. John Alexander, general manager, who described the company as the world's largest air freight forwarder, said there were two vehicles on the existing B licence, and these were used at London Airport. It had three vehicles on Contract A licence, but had been advised that this was wrong. "It had not occurred to us that anything was wrong", said Mr. Alexander.
Applications in respect of the other two vehicles were being made by Helmuth, the transport contractors, said Mr. Alexander, and Emery would be supporting them.
The reason for wanting this vehicle on B licence, was the need for one vehicle with a driver employed by the company; he would be an ambassador of the company, and could be asked to do more work of a different type than a driver from outside the company.
In November (COMMERCIAL MOTOR. December 2), Emery applied for a one-vehicle B licence in Birmingham. The LA, Mr. J. Else, then said he was puzzled by the fact that two vehicles licensed in the Metropolitan area should be spending all their time in the West Midlands.
