THE Abergele-Llandulas by-pass infilling work was accelerated this week when six vehicles operated by RHA members augmented those being used by owner-drivers on the contract.
The efforts of RHA members to obtain an economic rate for the work have met with quick and complete success. On Monday they were informed that Sir Alfred McAlpine and Son Ltd., the principal contractors, had accepted the rates of 3s. 3d. and 3s. 6d. per ton suggested at a meeting last week. (COMMERCIAL MOTOR. January 13.)
It is understood that McAlpine has placed a standing order for six vehicles a day and has advised the hauliers that any intention to vary the number will be notified by 3 p.m. on the day prior to the requirement.
The hauliers are very pleased with the outcome of the talks and this week stressed that an amicable relationship between contractor and haulier has been produced.
As recorded last week, the matter came to a head when RHA members objected to applications by mainly owner-driver operators to renew short-term B licences for work on the contract; the RHA maintained that rates were too low to be economic, and the North Western LA said he would need to be satisfied on this before renewing licences.
One alternative which, it is understood, had been suggested to the small operators was to run their vehicles on C-hiring arrangement, though this would involve them engaging drivers.
SEVERN BRIDGE ALERT
ALMONDSBURY motorway control centre will—at the request of the RHA—provide information on weather conditions which might hold up vehicles wishing to cross the Severn Bridge. RHA members should telephone the control centre at Almondsbury 2651. Advance warning signs will also be operated.
