Derbyshire Passenger Routes.

A proposal is on foot to link up Ashby de la,Zoueh, Mea,sham, Donisthorpe, Moira, Overseal, Church Gresley, Castle Grosley, Stanton, Stapenhill, Burton-onTrent, Newhall, Swadlincote, and Woodville, by means of a service of motor omnibuses. It is suggested that there shall be two circular routes at the outset, each with its starting point at Ashby-de-laZouch, and linking up with each other. at Church Gresley. The intention is to make headquarters at Ashby-de-la-Zouch, and for traffic to be exchanged at that point, and also at Church Gresley. Burtonon-Trent is now in direct connection with Derby by similar means, and it is hoped that the existing service between Leicester and Coalville may shortly be extended to Ashby-de-la-Zouch, which would then. provide for a direct route linking up Burton-on-Trent with Leicester, with valuable feeders in the colliery districts, of South Leicestershire and South Derbyshire. Mr. J. Knowles Hassall

(Manager of the Wooden Box m c'

Steam Co., Ltd.) has tem porarily undertaken the secretarial duties in connection with the scheme, and all inquiries and correspondence should be addressed to him at Moira Road, Wooden Box, near Burton-on-Trent.

Taxi War Bonuses.

Sir Edward Henry, Commissioner of Police for the Metropolis, has , informed us that our proposal for the authorisation of a war levy, in order to induce taxi-drivers to be more available in the evenings, has received careful consideration. The position, however, is that there aro too many practical difficulties, to allow, the suggestion to be acted upon. We understand that it is feared that there would be impositions in the case of hirers who are not very well versed in London's ways. We see no remedy, now, but the 1s.-a-mile basis.

A Circular about Petrol Prices.

The British Petroleum Co., Ltd., as distributing agents for the Asiatic Petroleum Co., Ltd., importers of " Shell " motor spirit, states that the importers and proprietors of " Shell " motor spirit regret very much the inconvenience which may be caused to their clients by temporary difficulties occurring from time to time in delivering their orders for motor spirit. These companies are supplying the great majority of the requirements of motor spirit for his Majesty's Forces in this country and of the Expeditionary Forces in Europe and elsewhere. Owing to the unique and exceptional re-_ sponsibility which they have accepted in this regard, they are frequently called upon to supply enormous quantities of motor spirit at very short notice, but they have deemed it their duty to meet these requirements even when—as occasionally happens--they involve some dislocation of the trade, andsome inconvenience to their other clients. In thus 'placing the National interest above other considerations, they invite the cooperation of their -clients, in order that their comrades at the Front may have the advantage of ample supplies. With this object in view, • they ask their clients to limit their requirements to a minimum, and, avoiding all waste, to use every, possible economy in the quantities consumed. Great assistance will also be rendered by refraining from the retention of aistock larger than is absolutely necessary for normal requirements.
