The correspondence columns of Commercial Motor and other trucking publications often contain whingeing letters from

drivers complaining that the "trade unions do not stand up for us or represent the drivers' point of view". Well, now is the time to do something about it— Bill Morris is retiring and elections for the post of General Secretary for the Transport and General Workers Union are about to be held.

From 24 March until 23 April, the T&G's 6,000 branches will be nominating people to stand for the position of general secretary. The independent Electoral Reform Society will then conduct a postal ballot of all members of the T&G to chose between those nominated by the branches. This will close on 30 May.

All truck drivers should get involved in this process—this is your chance to decide who is nominated for the job and who finally gets the post. If you are not a member of the T&G, why not join? Then you can take part in deciding who runs the union. The choice of general secretary, as with all policy decisions, is decided by the members—if you don't get involved, you only have yourself to blame. This is an excellent opportunity to stop moaning and start doing something to improve our pay, job security and conditions of employment. Rachel Webb,

Socialist Truck Drivers and T&G member.
