11 Ashfield District Council has been fined £5,600 for gross overloading of eight of Its refuse trucks at a Nottingham Magistrates Court.

The Vehicle Inspectorate (VI) found six of the 26-tonne three-axle rigids to be over the weight limit in just one morning. Five drivers received absolute discharges and one pleaded not guilty. His case is to be heard on 5 March.

Ashfield District Council's head of housing and environmental health, Bill Buckley, said he was deeply embarrassed and action had already been taken to prevent a reoccurrence. The council had also installed on-board weighers on five of Its refuse vehicles, Our intention is that all vehicle specs will include on-board weighing machines," he adds.

A Vi spokesman says; This shows proactive enforcement and will hopefully lead to less damage in road surfaces and an increase Inroad safety."

Two other councils Mansfield and Amber Valley were also penalised for overloading offences at the same court.
