Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Time and again I have read in Commercial Motor of hauliers going under after being run illegally or having a string of offences against them, and yet it seems that they have no difficulty in obtaining Operator's Licences. Whatever happened to good repute?

There are undoubtedly cowboy operators in the industry who drive down haulage rates due to their illegal activities and give the industry as a whole a bad name.

At a time when too many genuine operators are chasing too little work the cowboy operator is putting good men on the dole.

So come on Licensing Authorities, get tough. Start weeding out the bad operators and make good repute a genuine criteria for obtaining an Operator's Licence.
