• A month after Norbert Dentressangle bought Aston Clinton Haulage another big French firm is looking to buy British.
Paris-based Group Giraud is looking for a profitable international haulier to plug a gap in its expanding European network. In 1991 it bought Impens of Belgium and Aroci of Spain.
Leading the UK drive is Alan McKay, who ran Dentressangle's UK operation during its hectic expansion in the mid-tolate 1980s. He formed Maidstone-based Giraud Transport UK in 1991 and up until now has concentrated on winning backload traffic.
His company is currently getting 200 tilt and tanker backloads a month Group Giraud runs more than 3,000 trucks and is often confused with a much smaller company called Giraud, which is based at Sonnay, and specialises in Anglo-French haulage: "It happens every week," says McKay.
