• Bedfordshire truck maker AWD has started laying off production staff for a total of 10 days over an eight-week period which began on 17 February.

The company, which has the support of trade unions and employees, says the move will cut operating costs before it starts a round of export orders.

The 10 days of lay-offs will be scheduled on a rota basis over the eight-week period so that the factory will be continuously manned.

Unions have been told the measure will save jobs, according to Doug Lawrence, district officer for the Amalgamated Engineering Union, who says the proposal has received 96% support in a vote by four unions at the plant.

Li Last month's truck sales figures from the SMMT showed that AWD's sales slipped to 51 from 88 in January 1991.
