Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• An American-designed truck wheel nut which is claimed to tackle the problem of wheel loss is going on sale in the UK.

The manufacturer, Disc-Lock, says that 25,000 of the nuts are being sold each week in the States. British operators, including Esso Petroleum and Ulster Bus, have the product on trial here.

It is a free-spinning locking nut comprising three pieces, each with interlocking cams joined to make one assembly.

The top part is a hexagon nut with cams on the underside. The middle is a hex flange washer with cams on top and underneath, and the bottom part is a flat washer with cams on the topside and a smooth bearing surface.

If the wheel assembly vibrates while the vehicle is moving the interlocking cams rise against each other to lock the assembly, says Disc-Lock's Sittingbournebased UK subsidiary, which begins marketing it next month. The nut is made in Detroit and has been sold in America since October. It will sell here at £2.96 (ex-VAT) a nut.
