TO TEST the suggestion that town dwellers without cars were deprived of access to the country, the Transport and Read Research Laboratory, with the cooperation of Gwent County Council, asked a sample of Newport's 112,000 population whether they would support a bus service for pleasure trips. The reply justified the introduction of services to four popular rural destination, which were extensively published.
As a result, 0.23, per cent of Newport's population nobly denied themselves the pleasure of moaning about a lack of transport and used the new facilities. The other 99.77 per cent behaved normally.
