Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

CRUCIAL meetings of striking Leyland Vehicles employees at the company's Bathgate and Lancashire plants were to take place this week against a company warning that the company could be compelled to close.

Leyland Group chairman David Andrews gave this warning after nine hours' talks with representatives of the 12,000 strikers failed to reach any agreement. A Leyland spokesman told CM that union proposals for no redundancies would have cost the company £600m over five years, and would have done nothing to reduce current losses.

The results of these discussions were being put to the 8,500 Lancashire workers on Thursday, and the 3,500 at Bathgate yesterday (Friday).
