Ftn-isH Telecom in written evidence to the inquiry, claims to be the rgest user of vehicles in the country and the largest user within ie GLC area. Any restriction imposed would have considerable fact on its present organisation as well as on future planning.
Within London, British alecom has 7,037 vehicles up to jv limit, 1,150 hgv up to 16 tons rw, and 246 at 16 tons gvw us.
The group of 1,150 vehicles msists of specialised vehicles ?signed and developed solely ir BT use, and are employed on mstruction and maintenance ork.
Any restriction imposed on use of these vehicles will ave an immediate adverse feet on the ability to install and laintain the Telecom system, it §ya.
The 246 vehicles in the 16 ton AN plus class consist of heavy ibling vehicles which are used to install large underground cable and stand-by equipment.
BT is constantly looking tq reduce the number and physical size of its fleet, not only for commercial reasons, but with an increasing sense of environmental responsibility, it claims.
Most of the work is carried out during the normal working day to coincide with access to customers' premises. Any access restriction would preclude BT from maintaining its business, it claims.
British Telecom London should be exempt from any ban or restriction that is decided upon, the inquiry heard.
