THE AXE has fallen on the International Freight Transport Convention which was to have been held in Malta during March.
The seven-day-long meeting, organised by the Operational Services Group of the RTITB, has been scrapped because of lack of support. Delegates' fees for the conference in the sun were £325, rising to £495 for a delegate and spouse.
"There simply are not enough people taking up the offer to make it worth while going ahead at this time," said an RTITB spokesman.
"No cancellation costs have been incurred and the only money spent has been advertising. This will come out of the Operational Services Group budget which is self-supporting."
It was originally envisaged that the convention would provide a platform for the discussion of the possibilities and problems of international road freight transport.
Sessions had been organised on trends and markets in Africa and the Middle East; on settting up the operation; and on forward planning. Delegates were also given the chance to go sightseeing, visit a casino, visit the races, and generally take advantage of the tourist facilities that Malta has to offer.
