• Changes in the. provisions for ordinary driving licences and tests which take effect from June 1 this year are introduced in the Vehicle and Driving Licences Act 1969 (Commencement No. 5) Order 1970 and the Motor Vehicles (Driving Licences) Regulations 1970. These were laid before Parliament on Monday.
Among the more important changes which the Order and Regulations introduce are a relaxation of the law concerning epilepsy and driving (sufferers must have been free from attacks, or experienced attacks only during sleep, for three clear years in order to qualify for a licence); and an extension of the currency of a provisional licence from six months to 12 months, at a fee of £1.
Full licences effective from June 1 will allow their holders to drive groups for which they are not covered, but only as though the licence were a provisional one for those other groups. (This concession will not be extended to licences limited to pedestrian-controlled vehicles or mowing machines or those specifically hmited--e.g. to invalid carriages.) From June 1, full licences will cost £1. Applications for licences taking effect from June 1 1970 must be on a revised form, DL! (Revised) 1970. These forms will be available from Money Order Post Offices from May 26, and will be enclosed with reminders for licences expiring from May 31 onwards.
