New single-deckers now in service

• The handing-over to Clk. Miss I. M. E. McAlery, chairman of Belfast Corporation transport committee, of the first of 30 Daimler Fleetline single-deckers, marked the introduction of stage one of a new two-tier fares system accompanied by the introduction of bus tokens. Wednesday's ceremony was followed by a reception given in Belfast by three of the companies concerned with the supply of the new one-man-oixrated single-deckers.

On the same day, 92 o-m-o buses, both singleand double-deckers, entered service equipped with the Bell Punch Autoslot 2 automatic fare collection system, designed exclusively for the use of tokens. The introduction of this system was forecast in CM December 26, 1969, and there are plans to convert about 300 buses before ' Easter.

The tokens, which were minted by Imperial Metal Industries (Kynoch) Ltd, are of cupro-nickel, and have been made in two sizes, designed by Bell Punch Co Ltd, in collaboration with Belfast Corporation. The smaller token is available in packets of ten from numerous centres—such as Corporation Transport inquiry offices, libraries, rent offices, Electricity Board offices and railway stations—throughout the city. These packs are being sold at a considerable discount, to encourage regular passengers to use them and relieve the driver /operator of some pressure.

Casual passengers without tokens will now have to purchase the larger-size tokens from the driver /operators—without any discount. All passengers are required to place the tokens in the Autoslot machines, the machines being coloured red and yellow for the small and larger tokens respectively.

The.. 30 new Daimler Fleetline single-deckers are fitted with 36ft. front (dual width) entrance and separate (single width) exit bodies built by Walter Alexander and Co (Belfast) Ltd. Designed for a life of 20 years, the bodies employ light-alloy sections and components supplied from Alexander's parent factory at Falkirk, Scotland, although construction of the bodies was undertaken completely in Belfast to the transport department's specification.

Passenger accommodation is 43 seated and 15 standing passengers and features include fixed windows, all of safety glass, all-plastics interior lining, fresh air ducts running the full length of the saloon above the windows, and two recirculatory heaters. Public address systems have also been fitted.

Belfast Corporation Transport already has 279 Fleetline double-deckers in service or on order, and the choice of this chassis for the new single-deckers ensures standardization of mechanical specification between singleand double-deck buses.
