1 Hauliers working in the Dublin construction industry are up in .rms over low rates following a clampdown on overloading.

The problems stem from a police crackdown on customers who )ad trucks as they are now liable for any overloading. However, in irder to prove how the overload occurred a haulier must also be irosecuted, leaving him liable to fines and costs of up to £1,000.

Customers are refusing to pay hauliers higher rates to compenate for loading at lower legal weights and hauliers claim they are )sing up to 25% of their income because of the reduced loads.

A further meeting of hauliers is set for January -17 in the Red Cow lotel, Dublin, after which a group representing 1513 hauliers is to 'wet with Junior Transport Minister Joe Jacob in a bid to solve the

crisis. A number of overloading convictions have already taken place following the recent government decision to target overloading in the haulage industry.

Consideration is also being given to establishing a Vehicle Inspectorate in Ireland, where a special police team is currently tasked to carry out inspections.
