I. LONDON Carriers Ltd driver who was dismissed after carrying an inauthorised passenger and deviating his route has been awarded '350 compensation for unfair dismissal by a Manchester Industrial Abunal, The Tribunal was told that ohn Davis had worked for the ompany since October 1978. In July 31 his wife phoned the epot before he arrived at work sking that he ring her on arrival. He forgot to do so, but after raving the depot remembered, nd deviated from his route to all at his home. On his arrival e found that his wife had inred herself and took her to ospital in his vehicle.
Mr Davis then resumed his devery round, but was unable to amplete all his drops.
An inquiry was held by the )(ninny as a result but there as no record at the hospital of Mrs Davis having been booked Mr Davis suggested his wife called to give evidence, but the company would not agree.
The Tribunal ruled that the company acted unreasonably in its refusal to interview Mrs Davis.
However, the Tribunal also felt that Mr Davis contributed to his own dismissal by failing to notify the company about the incident, and his compensation was reduced by 25 per cent.
