A COMPREHENSIVE guide to speed limits throughout Europe was published last week by the Economic Commission for Europe. It coincided with an announcement by the UK government that, in a bid to cut energy consumption, speed limits on British roads are to be as follows: single carriageway roads, 50mph, dual carriageways, 60 and motorways, 70.

The guide, which is part of a major study of speed limits with a view to introducing some form of standardisation, lists limits for goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes gross and for passenger vehicles with more than eight seats.
