DURING the last 18 months haulage costs have risen on average by 40 per cent, according to Mr Jack Male, a vice-chairman of R H A. He says that these large cost increases had deterred some hauliers from seeking full adjustment of their rates and it had hardened some customers' resistance to hauliers' approaches.
Both reactions are, in his opinion, inexcusable, and it is time they abandoned these attitudes, he says. He believes all hauliers must im mediately ensure that their rates are geared towards making profits sufficient to reward their investment, to provide for the replacement of assets and to reward them for their work. Otherwise hauliers wasted their own and other people's time by complaining in the industry.
As for the customer, Mr Male emphasized that he must bear the increased costs, or face a decline in service quality and an eventual total breakdown of road haulage.
